Volvo Contributes to Revolutionary SARTRE Project

Volvo might be best known for what they bring to the tar in terms of two wheels. However, while retaining their core, they're branching out from pavement to rail.

That's right; Swedish automaker Volvo is contributing to the SARTRE project. SARTRE, for readers, who maybe haven't heard of the initiative before, stands for Safe Road Trains for the Environment. It's kind of a slogan really - one Volvo believes in and is…

Volvo Breaks the Rules, Again

The general rule among new car buyers has always been that if you want ultimate fuel efficiency, you need to get a vehicle equipped with a manual transmission. However, Volvo, in adopting their "DRIVe Towards Zero" philosophy started thinking this is one rule that's widely accepted for no real good reason. As such they set out to break it. Of course, like anything the Swedish automaker undertakes, it didn't take long for them…

Volvo C30 Electric Begins Production

The all new Volvo C30, available for a test drive at Weston Volvo in Davie, FL, is going electric. After months of speculation, and two years of concept, the Volvo electric car has begun production.

A total of 50 C30 Electric cars spent the last year as part of an European pilot program, testing and the all-electric engine in day-to-day driving. Volvo says 250 C30 Electrics will be produced between now and the end of…

Volvo has been awarded a 6.57-million-Swedish-kronar ($1.06-million) grant from the Swedish Energy Agency to develop the next-generation flywheel technology for kinetic recovery of braking energy in collaboration with Volvo Powertrain and SKF.

Flywheel technology, for those of you who haven't heard of it, is light, inexpensive, and very efficient. It has the capacity to make four-cylinder engines feel like six-cylinders and at the same time enhance fuel economy by 20 percent.

This news is so exciting; we have to cut right to the chase. The Volvo V60 Plug-In Hybrid is slated to go on sale in 2012. And Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby, has hinted that the Swedish automaker is even considering bringing it to our side of the pond!

Before it hits showroom floors, however, a near-production-ready model will be making one very important pit stop: the Geneva Motor Show. It's there that Volvo's…

Volvo Electric Vehicle (EV) Heads to Production

With the production of an all-electric version of their C30 three-door compact, Volvo is getting ready to make their official debut into the commercial EV market. The C30 EV was first seen four years ago when it debuted as a concept. Last year Volvo took the concept to the Paris and Las Angeles Motor shows. Now, Volvo has made official plans to begin production, with the first ten cars off the line heading to Swedish…

One of the main drawbacks of battery-electric vehicles is their short driving range compared to their gasoline or diesel powered counterparts. In an effort to overcome this dilemma, Volvo is initiating development of a hydrogen fuel cell that is expected to increase electric cars' driving range by up to 155 mi. The Leaf by comparison runs approximately 100 mi. per charge.

In the first phase of the project, Volvo (together with Powercell Sweden AB) will?

Volvo Air Motion Concept

Many new concept cars run on electricity, hydrogen, E85 ethanol, and a combination of some or all of those. But what about a vehicle that runs completely air? That is what Volvo has in store for their Air Motion Concept.

Yes, a car that runs on air. We've seen plenty of concept vehicles in the past work on all sorts of things.  The new design from Volvo may be the most interesting yet.

Volvo Hydrogen EV

Volvo's C30 DRIVe Electric concept will receive an additional hydrogen fuel cell to extend the EV's 94-mile range, according to the auto maker. This will create a hybrid hydrogen-electric plug-in. The fuel cell will add an additional (and amazing) 155 miles of range. What's really interesting is Volvo plans on sourcing the hydrogen from gasoline.

"Rather than relying on the promised hydrogen highway to be built, Volvo is exploring the use of?
