Volvo P1800 Celebrates its 50th

Volvo has started making its first modern electric car, the C30 electric.

For now, though, it's only going to go to fleet customers that are leasing some in Europe, like companies and government agencies, Volvo reports. Deliveries start at the end of summer.

Sounds like a nifty little car. It can run about 75 miles before it needs to recharge, which takes about seven hours. Top speed is about 70 miles per hour.

Tests on a fleet of about 50 cars have been conducted since last fall. Volvo plans to make about 250 cars by the end of 2012, possibly more if market interest takes off. The Volvo C30 electric is built on the regular assembly line and then transported to Göteborg, Sweden, for installation of the motor, batteries and electronics.
